Golfo Aranci, a beautiful seaside resort where an inestimable biological richness blends with deep-rooted traditions that resist the passage of time

A beautiful seaside resort where an inestimable biological wealth blends
with deep-rooted traditions that resist the passage of time.

Golfo Aranci is a wonderful location on the north-east coast of Sardinia. A guardian of ancient traditions that have endured over time and rich in precious biodiversity, it enjoys a strategic geographic position. Its privileged location makes it an ideal gateway to the Costa Smeralda and the entire north of Sardinia.

Situated about one kilometre from the port where the ferries dock, the historic centre of Golfo Aranci is an ancient fishing village that was established here in the 19th century. This community has roots dating back to the Nuragic civilisation, as evidenced by the numerous historical artefacts found in its marine area and the Sacred Well of Milis, a significant archaeological site located nearby.

In this place, life takes place at a more peaceful pace than the hustle and bustle of the big city. Its enchanting beaches bathed by a turquoise-blue sea offer a perfect haven for relaxation.

CURIOSITIES

The name 'Golfo Aranci' holds an interesting story of mysterious origins. In the past, this enchanting bay was known as 'sa Còsta de Figari,' in reference to the Figari promontory bordering the inlet. However, the current name is an Italianisation of 'Golfu di li ranci,' meaning 'Gulf of the crabs' in the Gallura language. Some suggest that this name derives from the frequent presence of the riparian crab on its beaches.

Other theories suggest that the name might come from 'Golfo degli arrangi,' evoking the idea of sailors who used to stop in this bay to repair their ships damaged during storms. Others think that 'Gulf of Oranges' may be connected to the negotiations between pirates over the division of booty or even to the hundreds of oranges that arrived on its shores after a boat laden with this fruit sank. After years, none of these theories have been confirmed, leaving an aura of mystery and fascination surrounding the origin of the name.

HOW TO GET TO GOLFO ARANCI

The most convenient option to reach Golfo Aranci is to land at Olbia-Costa Smeralda airport, which is only 23 kilometres away. From there, you have several alternatives at your disposal: you can rent a car, take a taxi or use public transport. From the airport, you can take the Olbialink bus, which has direct connections with the train to Golfo Aranci. If you are in other parts of Sardinia, you can use the train connection.

WHAT TO DO IN GOLFO ARANCI

If you are planning a visit to Golfo Aranci, you have many options to make your holiday unforgettable. This beautiful seaside resort offers a wide range of activities that will allow you to explore the beauty of the area and immerse yourself in its culture.

Explore enchanting beaches

Taking a dip in its crystal-clear waters is a must. Golfo Aranci has five town beaches along its coastline. At the heart of the town is the First Beach, known for its fine golden sand, but the most famous is undoubtedly the Third Beach. Particularly popular during the high season and renowned for its shallow, sandy seabed, this stretch of coastline is also the largest of the five. Another popular beach is Cala Sabina, located on the opposite coast and surrounded by its beautiful junipers. Last but not least, there are Cala Moresca, Spiaggia Bianca and Cala Sassari, the latter filled with dense vegetation typical of the Mediterranean maquis.

Breathe in History

For those who like to explore local history, Golfo Aranci offers interesting historical sites. One place not to be missed is the Cemetery of the English, located near Cala Greca, at the foot of Capo Figari. A 10-minute walk from Cala Moresca along a path through the Mediterranean maquis will take you to this peaceful spot that holds some 13 graves and a commemorative plaque. Another precious testimony to the past is the Pozzo Sacro Milis, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. This site, although still being developed, is considered one of the most important in the area. Its well-preserved underground chamber features a staircase leading down to the water and an internal ceiling cover reproducing an inverted staircase seen from below.

Stroll along the seafront - The seafront of Golfo Aranci is an ideal place for a pleasant stroll. Here, modern architecture blends with the beauty of the seascape, offering a relaxing atmosphere and sea views.

Explore the Capo Figari Reserve - At the tip of the Golfo Aranci peninsula lies the Capo Figari Nature Reserve, a green area of 850 hectares with particularly protected fauna. This is the perfect place for adventure and nature lovers, who can explore this green territory on foot or by mountain bike. With a bit of luck, you might spot mouflons, cormorants and peregrine falcons.

Savour the local dishes - The cuisine of Golfo Aranci is a delight for the palate. This location makes abundant use of the fish caught in its waters, as well as offering dishes typical of Gallura cuisine, that of the province of Olbia-Tempio. Among the best known dishes are the 'pulicioni gaddhuresi,' semolina ravioli filled with eggs, sheep's ricotta cheese, lemon peel and sugar. Don't miss the 'suppa cuata,' a delicious lasagna prepared with sheep meat broth, bread, provola cheese, topped with grated Sardinian pecorino cheese and herbs such as parsley, wild fennel, pepper, basil, sun-dried tomato and mint.

Lunch on a boat and spot dolphins - Treat yourself to a boat trip to the islands of Figarolo and Capo Figari departing from Golfo Aranci. Here you can swim in crystal-clear waters, explore the underwater world and enjoy a fantastic lunch on a boat. With any luck, you may even spot dolphins in the surrounding waters, making the experience even more memorable.
