An enchanting mountainous island of limestone and granite, rising from the blue Tyrrhenian Sea and offering unmissable opportunities for exciting boat trips.

Located off the north-east coast of Sardinia, the island of Tavolara is a true natural spectacle with a height of 560 metres and a length of 4 kilometres. It is often referred to as 'the world's smallest kingdom' and retains its wild beauty, largely due to the limited presence of permanent residents.

The history of Tavolara is fascinating and has its roots in Roman times, with the first traces of settlements dating back to that period. However, the most intriguing part of its history is related to King Paul I, who self-proclaimed a kingdom on the island in the 19th century. Although it was not recognised by any nation, it began to attract distinguished visitors. This unofficial reign lasted until 1962, when Tavolara was declared a nature reserve.

CURIOSITIES ABOUT TAVOLARA

The island of Tavolara presents a unique and fascinating atmospheric phenomenon: the Tavolara Cap. This characteristic cloud forms when the Scirocco, a hot, humid wind from the southeast, blows.

The island's extraordinary morphology, with its sheer cliffs, rises exactly perpendicular to the Sirocco currents. This conformation favours the development of the Cappuccio, completely enveloping the island. The altitude at which this cloud begins to form depends on the level of humidity in the air.

The Tavolara Cap is a testimony to the marvellous complexity of nature surrounding this fascinating island in the Mediterranean.

HOW TO GET TO TAVOLARA

To reach Tavolara, the ideal starting point is Porto San Paolo, only 21 kilometres from Olbia. Once here, you can follow the scenic SS125 towards San Teodoro/Nuoro to reach Porto San Paolo by car. Alternatively, ARST, the Sardinian bus company, offers an efficient connection between the two cities via route 514 in just over 30 minutes.

In Porto San Paolo, as an alternative, you have the option of hiring dinghies or small boats directly to get to the island in total autonomy.

WHAT TO DO IN TAVOLARA

If you are planning a holiday in Sardinia and are fond of the sea and water adventures, you cannot overlook this magnificent island. But once you have docked at Spalmatore di Terra, what is there to do? We have prepared a comprehensive guide to ensure you have a memorable experience in this fascinating place.

Visit the village - One of the best things to see in Tavolara is the picturesque village. A not-to-be-missed excursion is the one that takes you to the cemetery of the Kings of Tavolara and up to Punta Spalmatore, through Cala Tramontana and along a sandy path that leads to a picturesque tongue of sand and rocks, where two seas meet. Along the way, you will find information panels that will give you an overview of the surrounding environment, allowing you to discover the unique flora and fauna of the island, as well as some endemic species.

Reach the most beautiful peak - For lovers of adventure and challenging hiking routes, the island of Tavolara offers a network of breathtaking trails. The most famous and, at the same time, most complex route is the ascent to Punta Cannone. This walk leads up to the highest point on the island, Monte Cannone. Although it requires more effort, the reward is an amazing panoramic view of the island and the sea.

Journey through the local cuisine - There is no better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than through its cuisine. Two names to remember are 'Tonino Re di Tavolara' and 'La Corona', the best places on the island where you can sample local delicacies. If you are not very hungry, you can take a short break to enjoy a high quality coffee or refresh yourself with a delicious ice cream.

Relax on the beaches of Tavolara - Characterised by white sand and enchanting coves, the beaches of Tavolara are a must. Among the most famous are Spalmatore di Terra and Porto della Madonna, which stand out for their crystal-clear waters. You will find the first cove immediately after the information centre, but we suggest you take a tour and explore the surrounding area first.

Rent a boat - Needless to say, renting a boat in Tavolara is an experience not to be missed. This unique opportunity will allow you to share unforgettable moments with friends and family, immersing yourself in the crystal-clear waters and natural beauty of the island. Whether you want a romantic sunset aperitif, to celebrate a special occasion or simply to relax, chartering a boat offers you complete freedom. You will find options for every budget, including the possibility of hiring a boat with a private skipper and a delicious lunch on board. Moreover, Tavolara is part of the Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area, contributing to the conservation of dolphins and sea turtles, making it an ideal place for snorkelling and dolphin watching.
